Cosmetic dentistry involves dental procedures with the aim of improving the overall aesthetics of your smile. Cosmetic dentistry provides restorative benefits. Common cosmetic dental procedures include teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, white fillings, and orthodontics and dental implants.
Teeth whitening is the most common and the easiest of the cosmetic dentistry procedures. It involves removal of stains from the surface of the teeth. By this method, most of extrinsic or external stains can be removed. This can be done regularly.
The restoration can be direct or indirect. In direct restorations, the restorative material is applied directly onto the tooth. The most common type of direct restoration is dental fillings. Cosmetically, white or composite fillings are used as they create a natural- tooth-like appearance. Composite resin filling is widely used for its natural enamel-like color and translucency. Before applying the filling, the tooth is prepared and the desired filling is applied on the surface. Fillings are also used to repair minor tooth decays and also to decrease sensitivity due to enamel loss. Fillings can be done in a single sitting at the dentist’s clinic. The method of application of composite filling is called bonding. This is because the material is bonded to the surface of the tooth.
Indirect restorations on the other hand are like fixing tiles on the walls. They require more than one sitting at the dentist’s clinic. The most common indirect restorations include crowns, inlays, and outlays. In most of these processes, the restorations are pre-fabricated in the dental laboratory and then applied to the tooth. The end result is that the teeth are effectively restored and the smile is made to look more attractive |
